Math Skill Builders: Make Change

Make Change is an easy to use program for people who need to learn to make change or count change. Using a simulated cash drawer, learners practice taking customers' money and giving back the correct change. This program is perfect for:

  • Cashiers who use cash registers of any type. This program provides practice making change with and without the cashier being told the amount of change to give.
  • Any person who must handle a "cash drawer" either at a job or fund-raising activity.
  • Students who must meet state math standards for developing money concepts.

Make Change features:

    Two modes of operation:
    • "Count Change" - The amount of change due is known. The user is told how much change to give the customer and must count the correct change from the cash drawer.
    • "Make Change" - The amount of change due is not known. The user must look at the amount of the customer's purchases, and the amount of payment and determine the correct amount of change. This can provide practice in "counting backwards" to give change to a customer.

Three levels of difficulty. Beginning, Intermediate and Advanced levels can be selected to customize practice. Level of difficulty is determined by the largest amount of change required, whether totals and change amounts are displayed. the requirement that a transaction must be correct before proceeding, and how the cash drawer is fixed.

Status Report. A report on the learner's activity is desplayed at the end of a 'shift' (a series of simulated transactions). The report includes the number and accuracy of the transactions, the time required for transactions, and the accuracy of the cash drawer. Reports can be printed and saved to keep a history of progress.
