Adults who want to learn or review the basic operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of whole numbers appreciate the qualities of Math Skill Builders: Whole Number Arithmetic including: Many math software packages are full of games and "edutainment" that are demeaning to the adult learner. Math Skill Builders: Whole Number Arithmetic focuses on presenting arithmetic content in a method that is flexible to meet the adult learners' individual needs. As one teacher commented "Finally - something for the older learners and adults, without little bunnies on the screen".
The many options of Math Skill Builders: Whole Number Arithmetic can be set so that learners do not get frustrated easily. Adults are pleased that they can control: the speed of instructions in the tutorial, the number of problems in each activity, the number of times they can try to solve a problem, the choice of operation or skill level, how they input numbers - either with the keyboard or with the mouse, whether or not the program prompts where to put numbers in a solution, and so on. Progression through the skill levels is gradual. Each new level is just a little bit harder than the last. One new step is learned at each level.
Status reports appear at the end of each activity. Immediate feedback is available in Practice and homework assignments. On going record keeping can be displayed in reports at any time to show a history of progression. Skill level definitions are displayed in all activities and learners are well aware when they have achieved a new skill. Lists of skill level definitions can be used to set learning goals as well as to review and encourage progress. Adults who have had a hard time learning arithmetic before will be happy with their success.
Students can take as much time as they need to solve arithmetic problems, and solve as many or as few problems as they want. Learners can challenge themselves to solve arithmetic problems faster by setting time limits.
Students can choose to have a grid visible on the screen to use the rows and columns to help with number placement. Students can choose to have the program show visual prompts of where to put each number in a solution. In the beginning levels of addition and subtraction, visual "manipulatives" are used by the Tutor to demonstrate the arithmetic operation. Back to Program Description |
