Once the Math Skill Builders: Class Manager and Worksheet Generator programs are installed, and you have made worksheets, you are ready to run the Class Manager program. To get a quick start using the features of the Class Manager, without manipulating real class data, you can make sample files. This section describes these basic steps for using sample files created by the program:
  1. Start the Program
  2. View Class Skill Status
  3. View Student Worksheet History
  4. View Worksheet Details
  5. View Skill Progress for Individual Students
  6. View Class Profile
  7. Create Reports
  8. Make Worksheets
  9. Check Worksheets
  10. Change Class Lists
  11. Change Criteria for Skill Level Recommendations

 Sample Files: Start the Program

Double click the program icon (ClassMgr.exe). The Class List Selection dialog will open. Check Create Sample Files. At the Save dialog click Save to create a SampleClass file. Wait a moment while the program creates sample files. The Class Skill Status window will open with a sample class, showing sample data.

(At any time you are running the program you can choose Create Sample Files from the File menu.)

Sample Files: View Class Skill Status

The first time you open Class Manager, the Class Status view opens showing all operations for all problem types (whole numbers, decimals and fractions). The yellow rectangles indicate that work is in progress; green rectangles indicate that all skill levels have been completed, and grey rectangles indicate that no activity has been recorded.

You can view a more detailed Class Status view by clicking on a problem type (whole numbers, decimals or fractions), or selecting from the tool bar, or from the View menu. Click the name of an operation (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division), or choose an operation on the View menu or tool bar to see the status for just that operation. Click the colored rectangles to get information about how the selected student performed at that skill level. When viewing the status for just one operation, you can choose Order from the menu bar to see the class list sorted by skill level or by name.

Sample Files: View Student Worksheet History

While viewing all problem types in the Class Status view, you can click on any colored rectangle, and view the Worksheet History for the selected student. Return to the Class Status view by clicking the left arrow button on the tool bar, or by selecting Previous View from the View menu. When viewing one problem type in Class Status, double click a student's name to see the Worksheet History for that problem type. When viewing just one operation, double click a student's name to see the Worksheet History for just that operation.

All worksheets that have been checked for the selected student are displayed in the Student Worksheet History, with the most recent at the top of the list. While viewing all problem types, the Worksheet History view displays blue rectangles to indicate which operations were presented in each worksheet. You can view more details about worksheets by selecting a problem type and an operation from the view menu or the tool bar. Double click on any column of rectangles to jump to a view displaying only the selected problem type and operation.

Click on any skill level (colored rectangle) to see a skill definition, example problem, and a summary of the student's performance for that level on that worksheet.

Sample Files: View Worksheet Details

While looking at the Student History view, you can see complete details for any worksheet by clicking on a date, then selecting View - Details from the program menu. (Double-clicking a date will do the same thing). The Worksheet Details view shows summary information about the worksheet, as well as details for every problem on the worksheet.

Sample Files: View Skill Progress for Individual Students

While you have a currently selected student name, you can view that student's skill progress by selecting View - Student Progress from the menu bar. Select a problem type and operation from the View menu or the tool bar to see more details.

Sample Files: View Class Profile

Choose Class Profile from the View menu to see the distribution of the class over the entire sequence of problem types, operations and skill levels. Select a problem type and operation from the View menu or the tool bar to see more details.

Sample Files: Create Reports

Reports are intended for printing, as well as for exporting data to other programs. The Class Manager program provides student level reports and class level reports, as well as skill definition reports. To generate a report, select Reports from the menu, then select the report you want. Most reports include a dialog box that allows you to specify what to include in the report. Once generated, reports are presented in a separate window, with it's own menu and tool bar. You can print the report and you can save the report. Reports are saved in standard text files and can be imported into other programs. Text type reports can be imported into your text editor or word processor, and tabbed reports can be imported into your spreadsheet program. When you are done with the report, just close the window.

Sample Files: Make Worksheets

Before you can check worksheets with the Class Manager you need to make worksheets. If you have already been making worksheets with the Worksheet Generator programs then you have worksheets you can use. To make worksheets from the Class Manager, choose Create Worksheets from the file menu, and make choices in the dialog box to generate a batch of worksheets, or the Generators menu to open a Worksheet Generator and make worksheets.

Sample Files: Check Worksheets

To check a worksheet, choose Check Worksheet from the Edit menu, or click the check button on the tool bar. The Check Worksheet dialog box will open. If you have a currently selected student, that student's name appears in the dialog. You can select a different student by clicking the Select Student button and choosing from the list that appears. Click the Select Worksheet button and navigate to the worksheet you wish to check. If you are using the sample files, you will find sample worksheets in the SampleFiles folder. Once you have chose a worksheet, a representation of the selected worksheet, and a problem view will appear in the dialog.

The Check Worksheet dialog shows a representation of the worksheet layout on the left, and a problem on the right. The worksheet layout represents the rows, columns, and pages of the selected worksheet, and the numerals represent the problems. Green numerals indicate an answer marked as correct, and red indicates an answer marked as incorrect. The 'boxed' numeral is the current problem shown on the right. Click the Correct or Incorrect buttons to change the state of correctness, click the left or right arrow buttons to change the currently selected problem, and click the up and down arrows to change pages. You can also select a problem by single clicking the problem number on the left, and you can change the correctness state of any problem by double clicking the problem number.

Sample Files: Change Class Lists

When looking at the Class Status View, choose Add Name, Edit Name or Delete name from the Edit menu to change the names on the sample class list.

Sample Files: Change Criteria for Skill Level Recommendations

Throughout the program you will have noticed the colored graphics representing the current or target skill level for individual students. These recommendations are based on the student's performance on worksheets that have been checked. The rules for determining competence at a skill level can be changed. Choose Preferences from the Edit menu to set the percentage correct required to demonstrate competence, and the percentage that would indicate frustration, or a need for instruction, and specify the number of problems that need to be completed to make a judgment. Try checking worksheets after changing the criteria in Preferences to see how the judgments are affected.
