To quickly use the worksheet generators to make a batch of worksheets, or worksheets customized to student needs, choose Create Worksheets from the File menu. This opens the Create Worksheets dialog.

After you specify the Mode, Purpose, and Problem Types, click Create Worksheets, to make and save new worksheets. An alert box will appear to let you know where the worksheets were saved. Worksheets are saved in the same folder as the class list, in a folder named 'Worksheets_MM.DD.YY, or Diagnostics_MM.DD.YY, showing the date the worksheets were created. (Note that if you want to create more than one set of worksheets on the same day, you may need to rename the folder so that the file will not be replaced.)

To specify the types of worksheets the Worksheet Generator programs will create, use the Create Worksheets dialog to choose the:

  • Mode
  • Purpose
  • Problem Type(s)

Mode:

Choose Class Worksheets to create an appropriate worksheet for every student in the class, depending on the Purpose and Problem Type specified. Individual files will be created with each student's name.

Choose All Worksheets to make a batch of worksheets. One worksheet for every skill level, in all operations, in the Problem Types selected, will be created. Worksheet files will be named with operation and skill level (e.g. add12.wn, sub10.dec).

Choose Selected Student to make appropriate worksheets for just one student. The name of the student selected in the last view will be the selected student. Click Select Student to choose a different student name from the class list.

Purpose:

Choose Practice to create worksheets with problems all at one appropriate skill level. The appropriate skill level is the level suggested by the Class Manager, based on the student status.

If a student has a history of worksheet activity in the selected problem type, the skill level is based on where the student has demonstrated competence and frustration. (See "Defining Criteria for Data Analysis" for how to define the criteria for competence and frustration).

If a student has not had any activities recorded for a problem type, an addition practice worksheet at skill level one will be generated.

If a student has completed the selected problem type, the practice worksheet will be a review page with three problems at the highest level, in all the operations.

Choose Diagnostic to create worksheets that have one problem at every skill level in one operation, for the selected problem type. The operation will be determined by each student's status. Operations proceed in the order: addition, subtraction, multiplication, division.

If a student has a history of activity in a problem type, the diagnostic will be in the lowest operation that has had no activity (e.g. If the student is working on subtraction, with no activities beyond subtraction, the diagnostic will be in multiplication.)

If a student has not had any activities recorded for a problem type, the diagnostic will be addition.

If a student has completed the selected problem type, the diagnostic will be in division.

Problem Type(s):

Depending on the Worksheet Generator programs you have installed, you will be able to choose Whole Numbers, Decimals or Fractions to specify the types of problems on the worksheets. Class Manager will generate worksheets in the recommended operations, based on students' status.

If the purpose of the worksheet is Diagnostic, the recommended operation is the lowest operation at which a student has had no activity.

If the purpose of the worksheet is Practice, the recommended operation is the lowest operation that has not yet been completed by the student. The recommended skill level will be the lowest level at which the student has not demonstrated competence.

If you have chosen the Selected Student mode, you have additional choices for controlling operation and skill level. (Operation and Skill Level choices are not enabled in any other mode.)

If the purpose of the worksheet is Diagnostic, the Class Manager will show the recommended operation, based on the selected student's status. You may change the operation, to specify both the operation and problem type for a diagnostic worksheet for the selected student. (Skill Level choices are not enabled because they are not applicable in Diagnostic mode.)

If the purpose of the worksheet is Practice, the Class Manager will show the recommended operation and skill level for the selected student. You can change the operation and the skill level for making worksheets. If you select an operation at which the student has demonstrated competence, the default recommended skill level would be the highest level for that operation in that problem type. If you select an operation at which the student has had no activity, the recommended skill level will be the first level.
