Recognize Coins Named

Learn to recognize one type of coin

Choose the Identify Coins activity. Help students learn to recognize coins by naming and asking the student to point to one type of coin at a time. For example to learn to identify pennies, start by pointing to each penny on the screen and telling the student that it is a penny. Then, tell the learner to point to a penny. If the student points to the correct coin, let the student know that was correct, it is a penny. Then ask the student to point to another penny, and so on. If the student points to the wrong coin, tell the student it is not a penny. Show the student a penny again and then ask the student to point to another penny. Once the student can point to one coin at a time, tell the student to show you all the coins of that type (Point to all the pennies.)

Learn to recognize all the coins.

Choose the Identify Coins activity. Once the student has learned to identify each coin when only one type of coin is emphasized, you can start to practice random recognition of coins. When all the coins are on the screen, point to each coin and tell the student the name of each coin. Ask the student to point to each coin you name. You can randomly name a coin for the student to point to or you can use the Count Money program to randomize which coins to identify. Each time you choose a New Problem, the program tells the student to get a different coin. The student clicks on a coin to select it and the program lets the student know if it is the correct coin or tells the name of the coin the student selected. The student can keep trying to get the coin named until the answer is correct. When the student chooses the correct coin, all the other coins disappear. That is a good time to emphasize the name of that coin. The student can see the name of the coin and the coin on the screen at the same time. You can tell the student that is correct, it is the coin that was named and say the name of the coin again.
