Strategies for Using Count Money

Use the following suggestions for the best ways to learn to count money with the Math Skill Builders: Count Money program:

  • Start each activity with the Allow Talking, Show Score and Show Totals checkboxes checked to enable these options. (See How to Set the Options to Achieve Different Learning Purposes .)
  • Begin using the program with the Identify Coins activity and progress to Count Coins and then Count Money. Progress to the next activity only when the student gets all problems correct and has mastered the skill in the current activity.
  • Listen to the directions and read the directions in each activity. Click on the money and click 'Check Answer' to have the program tell if the correct money was chosen. In Identify Coins if the answer is incorrect the feedback tells what coin was selected so the student knows the name of the coin chosen, and that a different coin should be selected. In Count Coins and Count Money if the answer is incorrect, the student can look at the total selected and compare with the amount specified in the directions. Change the total selected, by moving money, until it matches the amount in the directions.
  • If an answer is incorrect, students should try again to get the answer correct before choosing a new problem. This assures being able to count any amount of money accurately, instead of just certain amounts.
  • When the student has mastered Count Coins and Count Money with the total amount of money showing, click Show Totals to remove the check so totals do not show under the money. Students should be able to count any money amount without seeing the running total.
  • Challenge students who know how to count coins and money to accurately count money faster. Set goals to complete a certain number of problems, 100% correctly, in a specified amount of time.
