In Quick Mode make a Quick worksheet with one arithmetic operation and one skill level. Have the student answer the arithmetic problems. You may want to have the student just give you the answers, or you may want the student to show all the work. Make an answer key and check the problems. Determine what percentage of the problems the student solved correctly. If the student has reached your criteria for competency, for example 70% (or more) correct, the student should proceed to the next most difficult level. If the student does not solve a minimum number of problems correctly, for example 50% (or fewer) correct, the student probably needs to practice solving problems at the next lower difficulty level. For example, make a test with 20 problems in multiplication level 4. If the student answered 14 problems correctly (70%), then try problems at level 5. If the student answered 10 (50%) or fewer correctly, then try problems at level 3.

You can change the default number of problems on a Quick worksheet in Edit -Preferences.
