Give Customers Correct Amount of Change (Make Change)

After learning to count change with the amount shown, cashiers should be able to count change for any purchase. Choose the Make Change mode (in options at the New Cashier window). The change amount is not shown and cashiers have to compute the amount of change according to the purchase price and the amount the customer paid. Start at the beginning level. Cashiers will not be able to end the transaction until the correct amount of change is given. Progress to the more difficult levels when cashiers can give the correct change the first time at the beginning level.

How to "count backwards":
When you do not know the amount of change to give, you must 'make change', or 'count backwards' from the purchase price to the amount tendered. Start with the smallest denominations and work toward the largest denominations. Cashiers should look at the amount of the purchase and start counting out change to reach the total of the amount paid.

For example, if the purchase price was $12.78 and the customer gave $20:

Give:

Say:

Twelve dollars and seventy eight cents.

Penny

Seventy nine

Penny

Eighty

Dime

Ninety

Dime

Thirteen dollars

One dollar bill

Fourteen

One dollar bill

Fifteen

Five dollar bill

Twenty dollars.
