When you do not know the amount of change to give, you must 'make change', or 'count backwards' from the purchase price to the amount tendered. Start with the smallest denominations and work toward the largest denominations.

For example, if the purchase price was $12.78 and the customer gave $20:

Give: Say:
Twelve dollars and seventy eight cents.
Penny Seventy nine
Penny Eighty
Dime Ninety
Dime Thirteen dollars
One dollar bill Fourteen
One dollar bill Fifteen
Five dollar bill Twenty dollars.
