Sometimes students do not do well on tests because they do not complete problems in a given time. Students can 'race' Talking Arithmetic Tutor to practice improving their speed when solving arithmetic problems. Follow these steps:

1) Show a problem on the screen.
Make problems that the student already understands how to solve. In the automatic mode, choose a difficulty level that is not too difficult for the student. In the manual mode enter problems you know the student can solve correctly.

2) Set the speed.
Start with the speed bar set to a slow speed. Try starting with a speed that the student can consistently solve problems faster than the Tutor.

3) Start the race.
Tell the student to start solving the problem at the same time the Tutor starts the demonstration. The student should try to finish solving the problem before the Tutor. Press Start and have the student begin solving the problem. The student 'wins the race' by having the correct solution to the problem before the tutor is done with the demonstration.

4) Gradually increase speed.
When the student consistently finishes before the tutor, increase the speed of the demonstration.
