The Talking Arithmetic Tutor uses graphic objects or 'manipulatives' to describe processes of addition and subtraction at the lowest skill levels. Use these activities to help the student see how manipulatives relate to arithmetic processes:

  • Choose Automatic mode. Set the difficulty slide bar at level 1 in addition or subtraction. Watch the tutor explain how to solve the problems. Count the objects as the tutor manipulates them to explain the steps.
  • Collect several simple objects (cups, spoons, shells, balls). Put a problem on the screen. Show the student how to manipulate objects to solve the problem. Then, watch the demonstration by the tutor to see how to do it.
