Students need to learn the names of numbers and the symbols used in operations to do arithmetic. They need to learn to read written symbols, to write symbols, to say the names of symbols when they see them, and to recognize the symbol when they hear the word. The optional talking in Talking Arithmetic Tutor lets the student hear the names of all the numbers and the symbols for the operations. The written explanations of each step show the students the words associated with the symbols.

Learn the Names of the Symbols.
Choose the Automatic mode. Set the difficulty slide bar at easy levels in any operation. Turn Talk on. Show a problem on the screen. Press Single Step or Start. Listen to the Tutor name each number and symbol. Read the numbers in the problems and the highlighted words at the side of the problem as the tutor says the words.

Say Names of Symbols
Have the student practice saying the names of the symbols after the Tutor explains each step. Point to the numbers in the problem and the words describing the step and have the student say the name of the number or the symbol. When the student is ready, have the student try to say the words to explain the step before the tutor. Say the words to describe each step in solving the problem. Say the numbers and the words that go with the symbols (plus, minus, equals, etc.). Say the words to describe a step in the problem then click the Single Step button. Watch the demonstration and check to make sure you used the same words for each number and symbol.

Recognize the Oral Names of Numbers and Symbols
Prepare the student with pencil and paper. Turn Talk on. Press Single Step or Start to start the demonstration of the problem. Have the student listen to the tutor, without looking at the screen. The student should write down the problem and the steps in the solution as the tutor says the words. When the tutor is done, compare what the student wrote with the numbers on the screen.

Use the Numbers and Symbols to Make Arithmetic Problems
Choose the Manual mode of problem solving. Say a problem or have the student make up a problem. The student should enter the numbers and choose the correct symbol to make a problem for the tutor to solve.
