The system of reading and writing numerals used throughout this program is the base 10 or decimal number system. In this system, counting is done by groups of tens. In the decimal number system every digit in a number has place value. That is, the value of each digit depends on its place in the number. Each place in a number is ten times the value of the place on the right. The first place on the right has the value of one, in the 'ones' position. The next place value to the left is 10, in the 'tens' position. The next place value is 10 X 10, or the 'hundreds' position, and so on. Talking Arithmetic Tutor identifies ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, and ten thousands. Tutor demonstrates how problems must be solved by putting digits in the correct places in numbers. Students can learn names of place values by telling how to solve problems exactly the way the tutor does.
