Some students may have difficulty doing arithmetic problems because they have difficulty putting the numbers in the right locations. Learners must know how to put numbers under other numbers with the right place value. Although students many know how to compute numbers, if they do not have the numbers in the correct place they cannot accurately solve problems. To learn to place numbers correctly learners can:
You can choose Guide Student's Solution to have the program show where to place numbers in a solution, in Diagnosis and Practice. The program prompts the student to place each number in the solution by a question mark that appears in the appropriate location. After achieving success answering guided problems, learners should try to reach the same level of competence using non-guided solutions.
You can have a grid of rows and columns show on the screen in Diagnosis and Practice. The rows and columns of the grid help the student see where to put the numbers. The grid is useful for helping learners put numbers on the right line, under the right number. You can choose to have the Grid on by Default in Preferences . If learners have achieved success with the grid on, they should also try to solve problems with the grid off. |
