Students need to learn how, and when, to use the calculator. Using a calculator must not replace learning the meaning of arithmetic operations, and the rules used to perform calculations. Practicing and learning how, and when, to use a calculator gives learners the option of being able to use a calculator if necessary. See Use a Calculator for tips for how to use a calculator. You can use the following activities in Math Skill Builders: Whole Number Arithmetic to practice using a calculator.

In Tutor, learners can try finding the answer to the problem first with the calculator. Then they can watch the demonstration, and compare the answer on the calculator with the answer on the screen.

In Practice, learners can solve a problem, then check the answer with the calculator, before choosing Check Answer.

In Practice, learners can use the calculator to compute the answers to problems. They can type numbers in left to right, or right to left, but should make sure they are entering the same number that shows on the calculator. To be able to type in just the number to the answers, turn off Show Work in Solution and Guide Student Solution in Preferences.

In Assignment, learners can solve all the problems without the calculator. Then, they can use the calculator to check their answers, before going to Check Assignment. Learners could also use the calculator to answer all the problems. If an answer is incorrect (use Check Assignment), they should try using the calculator again and make sure they put the numbers in the problem correctly.
