The Math Skill Builders: Whole Number Arithmetic program is success oriented. Before students experience excessive frustration, the program adjusts the problems presented to a more appropriate level. Math Skill Builders automatically advances the skill level when learners demonstrate competence. The program goes down a level if learners demonstrate frustration. Learners progress through the levels by doing well in Practice and Diagnosis . You select the levels of competence and frustration by setting the criteria for promotion and demotion in Options . You can:

  • Make it easier to progress.

  • If students get frustrated easily, it may be best to make it easier to progress. To do this, set a lower number for both promotion and demotion in Preferences.

  • Make it harder to progress.

  • If students require more challenges, set the numbers higher for both promotion and demotion in Preferences. When reviewing any level, have learners try to get a higher percentage correct than previously achieved. For example, if the learner progressed to a new level with only 75% correct, encourage the learner to try for 85% (or more) correct. The learner could eventually try to get 100% correct, consistently.
