To get the Guided Solution, make sure that Guide Student's Solution is selected in Preferences. When you answer a problem, in Diagnosis and Practice, a highlighted question mark shows where to put each number in an answer. If you also select the option to Show Work in Solution the question mark appears, showing where to place numbers, in all the steps of a solution. If you do not choose to show work, the question mark appears only where numbers go in the final answer.

Putting numbers in the guided solution

You can put numbers in the guided solution two ways:

  • Type the number at the keyboard and that number appears in place of the question mark.
  • Use the number bar on the left side of the screen. Move the arrow over a number on the number bar. Click the number you want in the answer and that number appears in place of the question mark in the answer.

The numbers appear on the screen from the right to left during addition, subtraction, and multiplication, just as they would when you solve a problem on paper. Numbers appear left to right in division answers.

Erasing or deleting numbers in the guided solution

Press the Right Arrow key on the keyboard, or press Delete to remove numbers. You can also click the arrow icon below the nine on the number bar at the left of the screen. The program removes the last number you entered.

Carrying numbers in the guided solution

If you selected Show Work in Solution, the question mark appears where the carried number goes. If you did not select Show Work in Solution, you do not put numbers in the carried position.

Borrowing numbers in subtraction in the guided solution

To borrow numbers you must press the slash (/) on the keyboard, or click the slash icon on the number bar on the left side of the screen. Use the slash to cross out the numbers as you change them to borrow. When you press the slash, the line automatically appears on the correct number. The number changes, to show borrowing.

Showing a remainder in division in the guided solution

The "R" for the remainder automatically appears in the answer. The question mark prompts for the number to follow.

Showing lines in division and multiplication in the guided solution

If you selected Show Work in Solution, lines automatically appear in appropriate positions in the solution. The question mark prompts for the next number.
