Learners need to be able to work through a multi-step process without doing all the work in their heads. Using pencil and paper enables learners to record and revise their thinking as they develop solutions.

In Tutor, learners can watch demonstrations to learn what they need to do to write the numbers in the correct position in a solution. Tutor puts numbers in the answer the same way you answer problems with pencil and paper.

In Diagnosis and Practice, learners can use a paper and pencil to complete the solution to the problem. Then they can enter the solution at the computer.

In Diagnosis and Practice, the program can help learners learn where to place the numbers in a solution. In Preferences, select Show Work in Solution and Guide Student Solution. The program prompts where to put the numbers in each step of the solution, just as if you were using pencil and paper.

In Assignment, learners can use paper and pencil to solve the problems away from the computer. Later they can check their answers with Check Assignment.
