You can arrange a learning environment that is helpful to the learner. To encourage the learner's success using Math Skill Builders to learn arithmetic, try these suggestions:

  • Remove distractions.
  • Distractions such as television or radio, can interfere with learning. Minimize the distractions, while running the program, if that is how the learner learns best.

  • Prepare any necessary materials.
  • Load paper in the printer. Have pencils or pens and an eraser available to do homework.

  • Schedule time for working on arithmetic.
  • Plan to make enough time available to accomplish what you set out to do.

  • Prepare the learner with the basic skills needed to use this program.
  • The learner should have a knowledge of numbers, a beginning knowledge of number facts, and be able to read the screens. The learner needs to know how to use a mouse to select choices on the screen, and to use the numeric keypad to type numbers. Practice these skills if necessary. You can use any word processing or spreadsheet program for this purpose.

  • Read the directions to the user and practice using the program.
  • Make sure the learner understands how to use the program before expecting the learner to use the program independently.

  • Set up files in advance.
  • If more than one learner will be using this program, in the same setting, you might want to set up files in advance. (See How to Save a File.)
