Math Skill Builders: Whole Number Worksheet Generator provides several ways to create a quick placement test to identify the student's current skill level.

In Quick Mode you can automatically create a quick Worksheet or quick Diagnostic.

    Quick Worksheet
Quick worksheets are one page of arithmetic problems, all with one operation and at one skill level. You can create a quick worksheet for any operation and any skill level. (The number of problems on a page is defined in the program default page settings in the preferences panel). Use this mode to test a specific skill level.

    Quick Diagnostic
Quick diagnostics contain one problem from each skill level. You can create a quick diagnostic for any operation, addition, subtraction, multiplication or division. Use this mode to determine a person's current skill level in a specific operation. You can change the number of problems at each skill level on a quick diagnostic in Edit- Preferences.

To create your own test in Automatic Mode, choose an arithmetic operation to test. Make a worksheet with at least one problem from each skill level you want to test. You may not want to include skill levels at which you are certain the student is not competent. Have the student solve the problems. Check the answers with an answer key. Identify the lowest level at which the student did not answer the problem correctly. This is probably the best level to start practice.
